Pirate’s Chips Restaurant

On a very wet, chilly and damp morning, following an appointment, we went looking for a new  place to have lunch. We have passed this place many, many times but today we went in. It is a smaller restaurant,  clean and decorated in a nautical fashion.

The menu is huge and we really had a time trying to make the right choice and decided we would share a 2 piece cod  dinner and (get ready) poutine fries. Now, before you think we have lost it, they have the best fish and chips we have seen this side  of  Vancouver. The poutine looked so darn good on another table, we had that instead of regular fries. Uh, uh, we were not the least bit sorry. The gravy on the fries was probably THE best. Our delightful server informed us it was a vegan gravy (???) but oh so good.

The cod serving was 2 gigantic pieces of heaven on a plate. Light batter, just a perfect golden colour served with coleslaw and lemon. Beautiful. It also came with a bottomless cup of coffee.

Now you would think we were done, right? hold on….the table back of us had a deep fried Nanaimo bar served with a large scoop of ice cream and equal sized mound of whipped cream. Both drizzled with chocolate sauce. Oh yeah!

This was a ‘had to try’ once in our lifetime, but I can think of two daughters and granddaughters that would kill for this dessert. It is lovely to taste, very, very rich to consume. This was shown of CBC Dragon’s Den television show. It is certainly worth a try.

We will be back. Their menu is definitely one to go to again and again just to try more of it.

The Keg, Nanaimo, B.C.

When I was growing up, my Pop’s gift to the family was to take us all out for dinner on Christmas Eve, knowing full well that it would be very busy tomorrow with cooking the big dinner, relatives coming for dinner etc. Now all these years later, my wonderful husband is carrying the torch. This tradition has carried on now for 71 years for me personally.

We tried several restaurants on Christmas and all were closed except for The Keg. When he phoned to see if they were even open it was about 4:45 p.m. and they told him the restaurant was closing at 7 p.m. Trust me people we were out and on the way arriving about 5:30 p.m.

Remember please, we have not been here yet a whole month and still travel with the trusting GPS helping us out. We arrived and it is quite busy. We were seated immediately and now the fun begins…..do we order the same old, same old or do we venture for something not  yet tried?

Okay, let me set your mind at ease as I ordered my glass of wine and Don ordered his special cocktail.

We read everything but settled for the best of the best. Don ordered the Prime Rib (his most favourite meal of all time) and I, here we go again, ordered the Filet. OMG! In all the restaurants called The Keg, this was the very best meal yet. No kidding!

The meat was perfectly cooked for both of us and the baked potato and veggies were fantastic. Did we have an appetizer? Heck no. Did we have dessert? Are you kidding me? There was no room for either of those things. I did, however, have the very same special coffee that Dad and I shared every Christmas Eve (when I was old enough, of course) and toasted him. This was a treat just the two of us had.

We left, laughing as our dinner date was finished by 7:02 p.m. and then we went home to a evening of freshly brewed hot coffee and some television.

If you are ever here on the Island and wish to try a fabulous restaurant, go to The Keg in Nanaimo and you will not be disappointed. I know we will be back.
