Cooking Class from Hooded Merganser, Penticton Lakeside Resort

Cooking class (Nbr 3) at the Ooyoos Home Hardware was with Chef Chris Remington, Executive Chef of the Penticton Lakeside Resort

http://www.pentictonlakesideresort.com/dining/.  The wine pairings were from Church and State Winery. http://churchandstatewines.com/

Last night Chef Remington prepared 7 items and, believe me, they were so delicious.  I had my favourites of the evening and this is what we had.  Grilled Oyster Mushroom on toast points, Stuffed Mushroom Caps with an Artichoke and Tarragon stuffing (fav #1). The wine pairing for these two was a Pinot Noir.

Crab Salad that had Cool Blue Crab Meat and also Watermelon radishes (really cool visually), served on a deep fried smoked salmon chip. Another dish was a Prawn and Avocado Salad served on a sliver of english cucomber.  The pairings for these two was a 2009 Chardonnay.

Here comes the finale….trumpet sound please…..Sticky braised beef  served on a super thin, herbed cracker (looked like a large wave), and  a spicy peanut soy dressing and chicken satay, served with a yogurt/mint dressing on the side..  Words cannot fully describe the flavours here.  (Fav #2 and #3).  The wine here was a super pairing of Cabernet Savignon. The wine was really perfect for these two dishes.

Thank you Chef Chris, Phil from Church and State and,of course, Frances for your hospitality in the best Home Hardware Store  and your wonderful charm.  Great fun!  Great Tastings.

Note:  Chef gave me permission to use some of his recipes here, so keep watching the next couple of days.

“19” Okanagan Restaurant – Two Eagles Golf Course, Kelowna

Yesterday we had an appointment in Kelowna and decided to take our good friend, Shelley, with us for lunch and she suggested  the 19 Okanagan Restaurant  at the Two Eagles Golf Course. http://dine19.com/

We were met a the door by a super friendly gentleman (holding a cup of coffee) and informed of a slight distraction on the other side of the restaurant.  Construction was going on.  We assured him it wouldn ‘t bother us and we were led to a table in front of a lit fireplace. We later found out the gentleman was Ian, one of the managers, who always had a big smile and friendly comment to all who were seated in the restaurant.

Our very competent server, Brittany, was bright, professional and had a sense of humor for three crazy patrons (us).

Shelley ordered the Applewood Club sandwich with Caesar salad. It had large pieces of roasted chicken with cheese, bacon, sliced apples, tomatoes and lettuce  with a yummy sauce all tucked in toasted sourdough bread.  The Caesar salad looked good but she didn’t share…drat!

Don ordered the Philly Steak sandwich with lots of meat, topped with crispy deep fried onions, fried onions, crisp bacon and lots of cheese accompanied with french fries.  He said the sauce was phenomenal.

I had, and forgive me, I don’t remember the name but it was a Carbonara pasta with homemade noodles, crispy bacon, sun dried tomatoes in a wonderful sauce. This was addictive, to say the least. Bravo!!

Then, of course, we had a Sinful Chocolate Ganache dessert.  Two house made Bernard Callebault ganache portions on a butter pecan crust, butterscotch glaze and vanilla bean ice cream. and THREE FORKS. Yes, it was all that and more…..yummy.

Shelley and I ordered the Pinot Gris wine and it was perfect.  Great friend, great food and a super great restaurant.  If you ever visit West Kelowna, make sure you take the time to stop in and enjoy great ambience, super food prepared by Chef Davin Bennett and friendly, casual and not stuffy staff.  You will be sure to mark it down as one of your favourites.

Lunch was $$
