The Keg, Nanaimo, B.C.

When I was growing up, my Pop’s gift to the family was to take us all out for dinner on Christmas Eve, knowing full well that it would be very busy tomorrow with cooking the big dinner, relatives coming for dinner etc. Now all these years later, my wonderful husband is carrying the torch. This tradition has carried on now for 71 years for me personally.

We tried several restaurants on Christmas and all were closed except for The Keg. When he phoned to see if they were even open it was about 4:45 p.m. and they told him the restaurant was closing at 7 p.m. Trust me people we were out and on the way arriving about 5:30 p.m.

Remember please, we have not been here yet a whole month and still travel with the trusting GPS helping us out. We arrived and it is quite busy. We were seated immediately and now the fun begins…..do we order the same old, same old or do we venture for something not  yet tried?

Okay, let me set your mind at ease as I ordered my glass of wine and Don ordered his special cocktail.

We read everything but settled for the best of the best. Don ordered the Prime Rib (his most favourite meal of all time) and I, here we go again, ordered the Filet. OMG! In all the restaurants called The Keg, this was the very best meal yet. No kidding!

The meat was perfectly cooked for both of us and the baked potato and veggies were fantastic. Did we have an appetizer? Heck no. Did we have dessert? Are you kidding me? There was no room for either of those things. I did, however, have the very same special coffee that Dad and I shared every Christmas Eve (when I was old enough, of course) and toasted him. This was a treat just the two of us had.

We left, laughing as our dinner date was finished by 7:02 p.m. and then we went home to a evening of freshly brewed hot coffee and some television.

If you are ever here on the Island and wish to try a fabulous restaurant, go to The Keg in Nanaimo and you will not be disappointed. I know we will be back.

Brown’s Social House, Nanaimo, B.C.

Friday Night

Well, we finally moved from Oliver and the first night here in Nanaimo, we went to Brown’s Social House (it was close to the Hotel we were staying in). I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful it was to go in, see smiling customers and staff and wonderful smells abound.

We were seated and after a very brief wait, and our server was over and we chatted about moving here, being exhausted and bring on the glass of wine PLEASE!!! Don ordered his usual drink and now we ordered. I went for the Hollywood Burger. Move over Burger 55, this was wonderful and they promote a gravy for your fries called “the Alaskan Highway Gravy. Don really liked it but I’m not so sure. I will have to try it again to give it an honest rating. Don had the roast beef French dip and he loved it. Trust me – no dessert here. But really enjoyed it here.

Back to the unpacking.

Saturday Night

Suzanne and Jade came over to help with the unpacking (and trust me, they worked hard). So…off we go again to Brown’s Social House. As soon as we entered, smiles galore and two of the girls asked us how the move was going. Can you believe it? This is not a small dining establishment and is full all the time. Now, we had not eaten any lunch and were starving. We did have to wait about 5 minutes and they came out with ice water for us to drink while waiting.

Now, here we go again…Don ordered a Virgin Caesar and I, of course, a glass of wine. When we ordered, Don ordered the Shrimp and Chicken Pad Thai. Jade ordered the same as Grandad and Suzanne ordered a burger as well.M e? Of course the Hollywood Burger. Our server said she had never tried it but, after me raving about it as well as having it two nights in a row, was definitely going to try it.

The atmosphere, staff, and food makes this establishment a real winner. I also suggested to Don we make this place our special ‘date night’ place to go to. I really liked it here and I know you will too.
