Walnut Beach Resort – Spring Grand Finale

This was the big finale for the cooking classes sponsored byFran and her staff at the Osoyoos Home Hardware. It was held at the Walnut Beach Resort and they didn’t disappoint. http://walnutbeachresort.com/osoyoosdining.html

Our Chef, Justin Paakkunainen (yes, it is spelled correctly) is a bundle of inspiration and humour, and his Sous Chef, Todd, put up and served a lovely barbecue. The rub on the ribs was thought of expressly for the barbecue they were preparing and believe me, you will read these recipes over the next couple of days, and you will wonder if they were put up correctly.

The wine pairing was with Adega on 45th Estate Winery in Osoyoos. http://adegaon45.com/They are a new winery and Pamela and her daughter Racyne did well with their choices. With the vegetable salad (grilled to perfection) was a Rose; with the Pork Ribs they had a lovely and not heavy red wine, and with the dessert (surprise ingredients) was a beautiful Port.

The scenery was lakeside, warm, sun just slowly sinking in the West and  was a perfect ending to a wonderful season of cooking classes.

And guess what? I actually won a prize…a cookbook. Yes, I was pleased.

Thanks again to Home Hardware, Fran, Suzie, Judy and all the others who stay late and assist where they can and to the Walnut Beach Resort for treating us so well and actually serving us at dining room tables. http://osoyooshomehardware.ca/

If you go to damnicandothis.com and check on the facebook logo, you can pick up the fabulous recipes Justin offered.

Can’t wait until the next session to start. Okay, okay, Fran and her staff, take the rest of the summer off and we will see you in the Fall.

Buy The Sea, Penticton, BC

I have known, myself, some pretty heartless landlords in my lifetime but today I heard of a new one. A real scummy one in fact. The market place is called Apple Plaza.

We have been dealing with Buy The Sea, a fish monger in Penticton  http://www.buythesea.ca/ for over 2 years. Also they serve the very best shrimp sandwich at lunchtime. This is true.

This business has been in the same spot for 20 years……until now. With barely 30 days notice, Apple Plaza told the owners of this establishment they have until June 15 to vacate the premises. Another tenant is coming in.

Now…there was a small space next to our fish monger that was vacant. Buy the Sea management was not given the opportunity to take it on and expand a little bit…after all, they had been here 20 years. No siree…the callous landlord dropped the bomb on these people and they have to move.

I spoke with Mike today (having eaten another fabulous shrimp sandwich) and he mentioned they were a day or two away from putting in new equipment.

I wish Buy The Sea the very best in the near future. Anyone who lives or visits Penticton should stop in to their new place #106, 2100 Main Street. (just 2 blocks south, beside Old Town Farm Market).

Andbe sure to order a shrimp sandwich…you won’t be sorry.
